Get The Scoop On Concussions From Your Tallahassee Chiropractor

By Javier Mcnear

Many people have heard about concussions or know someone who has suffered one, but very few people truly understand what concussions are and what impact it can have on someone. Many Tallahassee chiropractic offices see concussion cases so it is important that people have at least a working understanding of what this injury is and what it does to the brain and body:

Many brain injuries fall under what is called a traumatic brain injury, or TBI. There are many levels of TBI, and a concussion happens to fall into the mildest category. However, do not mistake the mild category for an easy fix, since this is still a blow to the head and must be taken seriously. Any impact, violent moving or jerking of the head can cause one.

Most people make a full recovery within a few days and can go about their daily lives. Be aware though that the symptoms could take a few weeks to go away completely in some cases. Symptoms include memory loss, blurred or impaired vision, confusion or disorientation and trouble concentrating.

Once you get a concussion, it then becomes much easier for you to get another. Even a slight blow or jarring of the head can cause you to get another one. Once that part of your body is injured, it is much more susceptible, even if you make a complete recovery.

The most common causes of concussions are sports related injuries, bike or motorcycle accidents and car crashes. Once someone has suffered such an event future injuries of the same are likely to cause worse concussions; this is why repeat injuries from sports like football, hockey, soccer or wrestling are so dangerous because each future concussion damaged the brain further and makes recovery harder.

It is estimated that only about 25 percent of people who get a concussion actually visit a hospital or doctor to deal with it. Since you are more susceptible after your first, this can be dangerous. If you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, see a medical professional immediately.
